Data Recovery – WD Caviar 2850 – Clicking Sounds

Data Recovery Issue:

Checked in a Western Digital Caviar 2850 that wasn’t mounting. Customer wasn’t sure if the drive was clicking or making any sounds.

Initial Diagnosis:

We then opened the drive cover in our Clean Room and unfortunately it was immediately clear why the drive was clicking. The top platter has light scratches along with contamination.

Data Recovery Update:

Unfortunately, since the customer ONLY needed the data to be bootable, it made the recovery Impossible since the top platter is damaged.

Clean Room Data Recovery Cost:

Unfortunately, the damage was too severe. There was no charge since we couldn’t recover the data.

Can’t say enough good things about Five Star Data Recovery. Took my drive in and had the data back within 24 hours. I was even able to recover the “damaged” files, so pretty much a total recovery of 20 years worth of data.
